Title: Success in autonomous language learning
Authors: Steffen Skowronek
Abstract: The phenomenon of autonomous or independent language learning has recently received increased attention from methodologists and specialists, in particular in the fields of computer-assisted and web-enhanced language learning (CALL and WELL), and in other innovative learning environments. In the context of learner-centered theories, including constructivist as well as task-oriented and activity-based approaches, the question of how we can best respond to individual learners’ needs and preferences has been raised by well-known experts with wide-ranging research backgrounds such as Joachim Ludwig (theory of learning), Uschi Felix (CALL pedagogy), Karin Kleppin (independent language learning counseling) and others.

This presentation will address two underlying theoretical questions: First, what is the nature of autonomous language learning? And second, are there any indicators which make success at independent learning apparent and, at a later stage, perhaps even measurable? The presenter is currently investigating learners’ perceptions of success and related learning outcomes.

On the basis of initial results of an analysis of learner diaries, questionnaires and further field research, some tentative answers to the above questions will be submitted for discussion. Furthermore, measures and materials will be presented that are designed to enhance learners’ abilities to learn autonomously. This encompasses their skills at defining their own learning goals, organizing their learning process, making informed choices about suitable materials and evaluating their learning outcomes.
