Abstract: |
Corpora for Content & Language Integrated Learning (Backbone) is a
Lifelong Learning project in progress funded by the EU(Transversal
Programme, Languages). This poster aims at outlining the main features
of this two-year project by focusing on its objectives and potential
outcomes. Based on the philosophy of the SACODEYL Minerva project
(2005-2008), Backbone proposes the compilation and subsequent
pedagogical exploitation of 7 oral corpora to develop materials for the
foreign language classroom. The project aims at fulfilling the need for materials for the teaching of pedagogically neglected languages and varieties. Thus, the sub-corpora will gather interviews, presentations and conversations in lesser taught languages, regional and socio-cultural varieties of more frequently taught languages and non-native speaker varieties of English as a lingua franca. These include Polish and Turkish, regional & socio-cultural varieties of German, French, Spanish and English as well as European varieties of English as a lingua franca. The language gathered in the corpora will adjust to the needs of language learners in secondary, higher and vocational education settings. The predicted outcomes centre on the provision of access to language learning resources for teachers and students. In so doing, the project intends to develop tools for corpus exploitation as well as language learning materials that will subsequently be piloted in diverse CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) e-learning courses. The SACODEYL experience will be crucial in the development of corpus tools for the pedagogic enrichment and exploitation of the corpora (XML file management, multi-tier annotation, web-based pedagogic search interface). The design of the language learning materials and the piloting experiences that will be carried out will comply with the principles of learner and teacher autonomy, authenticated learning and collaboration. |
