Parallel Session 2 (Room A-34)
Title: Smartboard-compatible video-processing applications as a tool for assessing adult learners' proficiency in a foreign language
Authors: Serguei Podoprigora
Abstract: This presentation introduces the following two new components of CALL-relevant language assessment: (1) one-frame video captions and multi-frame video segments purposefully filmed, selected and processed by a language instructor for the purpose of initiating language activity of an interviewee or examinee; and (2) one-frame video captions and multi-frame video segments purposefully filmed, selected and processed by a leaner in a course of a portfolio-related project to support one’s assessment-related presentation. The first aforementioned targets primary visual learners, who tend to get language production initiated by the information-related visual; the second is oriented toward primary tactile and kinesthetic learners who benefit from finding their secondary learning mode, e.g., making and processing their own video clips. The latter form has an additional positive impact on all types of learners, as the self-prepared image-base for language production eliminates one’s legitimate concern of potential distraction caused by the unfamiliar, surprising or even confusing interface developed by others.
The presenter will outline and illustrate by examples the methodology of creating assessment-related video captions and segments to be incorporated in SmartBoard’s set of programs for presentation at the assessment session. Step-by-step guidance in the relevant processes will be provided with reference to the USA-ACTFL and USA-ILR language proficiency scales, addressing assessment models for various lexical/topical domains at different levels of language competence.
The presenter will also refer to a wide range of existing video-processing applications that may be used with the SmartBoard (e.g., Ulead VideoStudio 10 &11; Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6, etc)
