Title: ESL/EFL Learning Activities with YouTube Screening Room
Authors: Harry Harris
Abstract: English language teachers are constantly looking for fresh material and ideas that they can use in their classes. One free online source is the YouTube Screening Room, which serves as a platform offering international films that range in length from a few minutes to much longer. For basic as well as more advanced EFL/ESL purposes, many of these can be used as a springboard for a variety of activities, especially speaking and listening and even writing and possibly reading.

In this demonstration, we will examine a few short films that, because of their brevity, may particularly lend themselves to ESL/EFL classroom activities. Included will be discussion of some of the methodology this presenter has used in his classrooms in Japan as well as student response (basically positive, though not always expected, but usually relevant in some interpreted form to all of us).

Participants are invited to share their ideas to make this learning experience more meaningful to others who may be attending. They are also encouraged to experiment later with classroom use of the material on this site, adapting it to the needs and demands of their own academic environments. Finally, it is hoped that this look, or re-look, at the YouTube Screening Room may inspire English language educators to consider use of other Internet-based materials that may be of benefit, and interest, to their students.
