Title: | Part II: a study of staff reaction to the adoption of CALL and ICT |
Authors: | John Gillespie |
Abstract: |
This paper builds on work undertaken by Gillespie and Barr in 2001 on
staff reaction to the integration of technology into language teaching.
In particular it will concentrate on one academic institution, that of
the proposer, as a case study, compare the situation now to the one
that existed in 2001 and outline the subsequent progress that has taken
place. It is part of a longitudinal study that is considering the
integration of CALL into mainstream language teaching departments, the
first part of which was reported at EUROCALL 2008. Part I described the teaching environment, the staffing of languages, outlined the programmes available, and explained the current penetration of CALL. The paper concentrated on the interpretation of quantitative data. Part II will report on the results of in-depth interviews of all languages staff in the institution to supplement and elaborate on that data. The study will give reasons for the increase in staff participation in the use of CALL/ICT and seek to account, on the basis of the data collected, for the current success. It will also indicate the change in the numbers of staff in each of the three categories, consider the nature of continued resistance, and identify the reasons given for the changes that have taken place. In mapping the changes that have taken place over a period of nine years, a series of guidelines for future/continued development and integration of CALL, not only here, but in other institutions will be elaborated, reflecting, in particular, on the role of senior managers, the need for dedicated staff, the adoption of innovative teaching practices, the importance of significant financial resources, the availability of expert technical help, the provision of hardware and software, the role of staff training and the interface with institutional policies and initiatives. |
