Title: | A streaming media module for Moodle |
Authors: | Paul Daniels |
Abstract: | Course management systems (CMS), such a Moodle, are becoming increasingly established in language education. At the same time, the need for enhanced multimedia capabilities within a CMS is evident. Often, CMS are used to manage reading and writing activities due to the availability and simplicity of tools such as online journals, blogs, forums and quizzes. But with the improvements in online media streaming technologies, language instructors now have access to the necessary tools for implementing networked-based speaking and listening activities with interactive multimedia elements. However, one disadvantage is that the process of seamlessly linking a CMS with multimedia applications can be somewhat complex. To simplify this process, the presenter has developed an open source media streaming template using Flash technology that can be added to existing modules within a CMS. The template can be used to record and playback speech within a Moodle environment. It can also be modified for use with other open source systems. This showcase will demonstrate several modules that make use of the template in order to augment the existing multimedia capabilities of Moodle. The template requires a Flash Media Server to deliver applications that can record and play back speech within a Moodle activity. The template uses both PHP (a scripting language used in open source projects such as Moodle) and Flash in order to link rich media clients with student and course data living on the Moodle server. The presenter will illustrate how this voice recording and playback template can be embedded into Moodle’s assignment, forum, blog, and journal modules. |
